Engineering and technological advances in the automotive industry have created a strong demand for highly skilled auto technicians. The Automotive Technician program at Southwest Tech is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and is designed to prepare the student for an entry level position in this industry.
First year students are trained in proper maintenance practices, including engine, cooling, and drivetrain service. Electrical system service and testing, drivetrain, manual transmission and engine repair procedures are also covered. Emphasis is placed on the development of safe work habits, efficiency, and problem solving skills through out the program.
Second year students are trained to service air conditioning, steering and suspension, brakes, automatic transmissions, fuel, emission and ignition systems. They work with the latest diagnostic test equipment to develop efficient and reliable diagnostic and repair techniques needed to service and repair today’s automobiles.

Motorcycle technician courses prepare students to enter the job market as experienced, highly skilled motorbike technicians. As oil costs continue to increase, more and more consumers are generally turning to motorcycles as a method of transportation. This has lead to a greater demand for experienced motorcycle mechanics. In addition to community colleges that supply certificate and associate diploma programs as motorcycle techs, there are several big nationwide technical institutions with locations throughout the United States. Institutions such as WyoTech and MMI provide very specially designed motorcycle tech programs.
At the large countrywide schools such as Motorcycle Mechanic Institute (MMI) you will learn on cutting edge equipment and gain familiarity with the most up-to-date technologies used by motorcycle manufacturers around the world. In fact, many of these schools enable you to specialize on specific manufacturers. So if you wanted to become merely a Harley Davidson mechanic you could locate a school that would allow you to do this. Schools also offer specialization in Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, or BMW.
Choosing a Motorcycle Technician School
There are many facts to consider when choosing a motorcycle technician program. Probably the most important considerations are cost, time commitment, and work placement. Attending one of the large country wide schools can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 or more with respect to the courses you choose to take. Taking lessons at a local college will probably be significantly cheaper, but you will never be learning on the most up to date gear, and the course work could be more general in nature. Time commitment is the one other huge factor. If you are doing work full time and attending classes, it will take you a little longer to complete your motorcycle mechanic training. Finally, and in all likelihood the most important consideration is job placement. The better schools will, without doubt be able to help you get your foot in the door of the large motorcycle manufacturers, and some of the trade schools supply classes in conjunction with the large motorcycle manufacturers.
Harley Davidson Mechanic Program
MMI offers elective classes particularly for those interested in becoming a Harley Davidson Mechanic. They have a 24 week Harley Davidson motorcycle mechanic study course that focuses on late model bikes that is fully sustained by Harley Davidson. In addition to the opportunity to work with the iconic American bikes, the course will entirely prepare you for employment at a Harley Davidson dealership by teaching you to comprehend customer skills and shop management techniques.
Honda Pro Technician Routine Maintenance Certificate
If you would rather work on Honda motorcycles, MMI also offers a collection of courses which are wholly endorsed by Honda to help you earn your Honda Pro Technician Routine Maintenance Certificate. In addition to Honda Cycles, you will learn to work on scooters, Quads, and Honda watercraft. This program is 24 weeks long and because it is based on Honda, you’ll get the opportunity to focus on the latest models straight from the factory.
If your goal is become a motorcycle mechanic, there are several options. Take your time and research and choose the correct place for you among all of the motorcycle technician educational institutions.
